Russian MiG-31 Jets Violate Estonian Airspace

On September 19, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets violated
Estonian airspace. According to Estonia’s Ministry of Defense, the aircraft
remained over the country’s territory for about 12 minutes before leaving.
Tallinn summoned the Russian ambassador for an official
protest, calling the incident “a serious breach that threatens regional
security”.
NATO expressed concern over Russia’s actions. An alliance
representative stated that “any violations of the airspace of NATO member
states are unacceptable and increase tensions in the region”.
The Russian side has not yet officially commented on the
incident. Previously, Moscow repeatedly claimed that its military aviation
operates strictly in accordance with international law, often accusing Western
countries of “provocations” near Russia’s borders.
It should be noted that Estonia and other Baltic states
regularly report Russian military aircraft approaching their territory. Since
2022, following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the number of such
incidents has increased. NATO has strengthened airspace patrols in the region,
including the Baltic Air Policing mission.
Experts point out that the flight of Russian MiG-31s over
Estonian territory may be perceived as a show of force and a test of NATO’s
reaction. At the same time, the length of the violation – more than 10 minutes –
appears unusually long for such incidents and may indicate either a deliberate
provocation or technical navigation failures.
