Azerbaijan Initially Advocated for Direct Negotiations Without Mediators – Expert

In an interview with “CCBS”,
Professor of Political Science Rovshan Ibrahimov commented
on the possible consequences of the recent tensions in Russian-Azerbaijani
relations and the prospects of the Armenian-Azerbaijani negotiation process.
According to the
expert, Baku’s position from the very beginning was to conduct negotiations directly, without the involvement
of external mediators. This approach, in his opinion, reflects
Azerbaijan’s aspiration to build a regional security system based on sovereign dialogue and
to avoid pressure from major powers.
Ibrahimov emphasized
that the recent diplomatic tensions between Moscow and Baku could accelerate the search for
compromises between Armenia and Azerbaijan, as both sides are
interested in resolving issues independently.
The expert also noted that the Russian-Azerbaijani tensions are unlikely
to lead to a serious revision of bilateral relations but could serve as a
signal to reconsider Russia’s role in the peace process. According to
Ibrahimov, Yerevan and Baku should seize the
opportunity to establish a direct and sustainable dialogue, as
delaying the conflict resolution only increases external interference.
