Romania is reinforcing its air defense measures following a series of drone-related incidents near its border with Ukraine. Over the past several days, the Romanian Air Force has scrambled F-16 fighter jets multiple times to monitor the airspace and respond to aerial objects approaching the country's borders.

According to Romania's Ministry of National Defence, this marks the third such incident within a short period. In several cases, unmanned aerial vehicles were detected flying in close proximity to the Romanian border, while authorities reported that some drones briefly entered Romanian airspace. Following each incident, military units conducted inspections of border areas and coordinated their response with NATO allies.

Romanian officials stressed that the situation remains under control but noted that the ongoing conflict in neighboring Ukraine requires the country's air defense forces to maintain a heightened state of readiness. The Ministry of National Defence stated that all response procedures are being carried out in accordance with NATO standards, while radar surveillance and air monitoring systems continue to operate at an elevated level.

Against the backdrop of the increasing number of incidents, Romanian President Nicușor Dan has intensified consultations with NATO allies. According to Romanian officials, a government and military delegation has traveled to the United States to discuss strengthening Romania's air defense capabilities, expanding intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and enhancing security cooperation in the Black Sea region.

One of the key topics on the agenda is the further development of Romania's capabilities to detect and intercept unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the integration of the country's air defense systems with NATO's collective defense architecture. Bucharest is also seeking to expand military-technical cooperation with its allies, including the modernization of radar surveillance systems and a stronger Allied presence on NATO's eastern flank.

 

Security analysts say the growing number of drone incidents near Romania's border underscores the increasing risk of the Russia–Ukraine war spilling over into NATO territory. In this context, Romania is seeking not only to strengthen its national security framework but also to deepen coordination with Alliance partners, viewing the Black Sea region as one of Europe's most strategically important security areas.

Experts believe that expanding air defense capabilities and improving intelligence cooperation will remain among Romania's top security priorities in the coming months as tensions in the Black Sea region continue.
